Quarter 4, which is from now until the end of the year includes online shopping. Last year, I used this category to buy Discounted Gift Cards from places like Raise and Junkcard. I assumed the same would be for this year, I was wrong.
I made a purchase on Junkcard and didn't get my 5% cashback. Normally, this means I need to message Discover to make a manual adjustment. I did that and got back this response. Bolds are my own.

I don't have first hand knowledge of this, but I have to assume that anything purchased from Gift Card Mall or from American Express is going to be treated the same way.
