Bank of America Museums on Us - This Saturday and Sunday

Bank of America Museums on Us program gives Bank of America card holders free access to select museums on the first Saturday and Sunday of the month.   January 3rd and 4th are the dates for this month so that means this Saturday and Sunday are the free days this month.

You need to have a credit or debit card in the name of each person so you still have to pay for kids, unless you get a credit card for you child, like I did.

Sign up for email or text alerts to remind yourself of the dates here.

Here is a list of the museums in the New York/New Jersey area:

American Express Gift Cards - 2.25% from Top Cashback - Today Only!

Disclaimer: I receive a referral commission for the following link(s) and I greatly appreciate supporting the site: Top Cashback

This deal happened about a week ago and it is back. Hopefully it becomes a weekly trend!

Until the rest of 12/31, Top Cashback is offering 2.25% cashback for buying American Express Gift Cards. This is a very good sign considering there was a time when American Express Gift Cards disappeared from all the shopping portals.

American Express Gift Cards have long been one of my best buds in the manufactured spending world. Unfortunately, with the demise of Amazon Payments, they are far less useful, but they still can have their uses.

What Can I Do With This Deal?

The maximum you can buy per person is $10,000 per 15 business days (this is new). If you purchase more than $5,000, your shipment will require a signature upon arrival. If you bought $10,000 last week, you are out of luck for this week. 2.25% is $225 cashback from Top Cashback. Purchase fees and shipping fees come out to $24.75.

Before I get into any heavy math, I will give you a preview of what you will get:

  1. 4.2% cashback everywhere or $135.50 with a Fidelity American Express.
  2. Meet a spending threshold and make $35 on a 1% cashback card
  3. "Buy" your favorite miles for under a penny per point.

1) Fidelity American Express

  • 2% cashback everywhere. For a $10,024.75 order, this comes out to $200.50 from Fidelity and $225 from Top Cashback. After fees, this comes out to about $425.50, which is 4.2% cashback to spend anywhere. Not too shabby!

2) Meet a Spending Threshold

  • Recently signed up for a credit card and need to spend money to get the bonus? Me too! You can buy these gift cards to put money on your credit card now and use these gift cards over time.
    • Assuming your credit card gets 1% cashback on every purchase, you will get $100 cashback from your credit card and $225 from Top Cashback for a total of $325 after fees or 3.2% cashback while meeting a spending threshold at the same time.
3) Buy Miles Cheaply
  • You can take this as an opportunity to buy 10,000 miles on your favorite credit card for a very cheap price. You would want to cash out the gift cards to make it worthwhile. That comes next.

Using American Express Gift Cards

What should you do with these gift cards once you buy them?

  1. Spend them like an American Express credit card. You can buy three $3,000 gift cards and one $1,000 card. I recommend not using them on any purchase that you might want to return so that you don't have to keep track of them later.
  2. Cash out. I don't know of any way to do this cheaply. You can use Google Wallet to send money to a friend (read: my wife) who can then withdraw to a bank account. This costs a whopping 2.9% or $290. You will keep about $9,710 of the $10,000.
    • With Fidelity American Express you will end up keeping about $135.50 for about half an hour of work.
    • If you are meeting a spending threshold on a 1% card, you will be $35 ahead and still be $10,000 closer to your target
    • If you are buying miles, you will be getting 10,000 miles at a fee of $0.0065 per mile.
      • You are "buying" 10,000 miles for $65 after fees

No promo codes! Your cashback from Top Cashback will be invalidated.

Bank of America No Longer Allowing Multiple Better Balance Rewards Applications - There is an Even Better Workaround!

The last couple of applications for myself, my wife and family members for a second (or fourth) Bank of America Better Balance Rewards cards have resulted in a denied application since Bank of America says it is a duplicate application.

Multiple Better Balance rewards cards are highly desirable to me since each card has a value of up to $120 a year with zero effort once everything is set up.  I like to think of them as the credit cards that keep on giving.

I was getting kind of bummed, until I remembered that there is a workaround.  Other Bank of America credit cards can be "downgraded" into the Better Balance card by calling up.

I happen to have two Bank of America Cash Rewards cards because they were offering a $400 sign up bonus at the time.  I called tonight and I was able to downgrade my second Cash Rewards card into my fourth Better Balance Rewards card.  Awesome!

Right now, you can sign up for a Cash Rewards card with a $175 sign up bonus for spending $500 in the first 3 months.  Get your bonus and then convert, it's even better than applying directly for the Better Balance!

If you already have a Cash Rewards card, check out the Travel Rewards card instead.

Sprint - Cut Your AT&T or Verizon Bill in Half

Sprint is offering a promotion now where they claim they will cut your bill in half.  Upload your bill at Sprint's website or bring your bill into a Sprint location and they will tell you what your new monthly bill will be with Sprint instead of AT&T or Verizon.

You must give in your phones as well to get Sprint phones.

Sprint will even give you up to $350 per phone line to cover early termination fees on your existing plan.

Please keep in mind that the discount is only for service charges.  If you have a monthly fee associated with your phone, that will not be halved.  Sprint acknowledges that most people will save closer to 20% with this promotion.

Ask your representative how much a Sprint plan will cost without this promotion, you may be surprised to find that it might actually be a better deal for you to ignore this promotion and just switch over on their regular rates.

$5 Free from Square App Referral

You can get $5 for free from Square Cash if you are referred to and you download their Mobile app.  The money goes right into your bank account via a debit card.

This is run by the same company that is a player in the mobile credit and debit card processing business.

You will need to be referred via your cell phone number, so you can email me your cell number and I will be happy to refer you.

Once you have Square Cash, you can send money to anyone's phone number or email address and they can withdraw to their bank account via a linked debit card.

You get $5 for referring someone else as well, so try to find others who you can refer as well.

Nationwide Visa Buxx - Emergency Manufactured Spending Method

I bet you didn't even know that there was such a thing as emergency manufactured spending.  I mean, seriously, what is that?

Emergency manufactured spending happens when you have signed up for 8 credit cards in the last two months and you have activated each one and completed the spending required for the sign up bonus.  Everything is perfect, right?  Well, what about that one credit card that you put in your "to do pile" on your desk and forgot to take care of, just like everything else on your desk (is that just my desk?)?  Or, what happens when you go to your favorite 3 lettered drug store to buy some gift cards only to find out that they are out of stock and now, you have 2 days to complete $3,000 of spending or lose out on your bonus.  That, my friends, is a true manufactured spending emergency.

How are you going to spend that money without a big ding to your wallet?  This is where the Nationwide Visa Buxx comes in.  It isn't my go to tool, but it is always good to have a few tricks in your pocket.  Manufactured spending is an every changing game of Wack a Mole.  You don't want to be left needing to spend $10,000 in the next 3 months and no way to complete that spending because Vanilla Reload has been discontinued (Do people still use those?) or because Paypal shut down your account!  The nerve, seriously!

Nationwide Visa is a prepaid debit card designed to help your teenager with spending.  You sign up for an account and add your "teen" onto your account and a prepaid debit card will come in the name of your teen.  Funds can be added via Visa or Mastercard credit cards.  Cash can then be withdrawn via ATM.  While this is a fine system, the fees associated with the method make it, for the most part, not worth very much if you aren't in hitting a spending threshold.

Not Just for Teens

While the account is billed for teens, anyone can be a teen, since we are all teens at heart.  Seriously though, anyone can get an account.  Enter any correct social security number and that same person's correct age and you can get a card, even if your "teen" is your spouse who is 45.

Adding and Withdrawing Money and Fees

You can load up to $500 a day online, but you can only have a maximum of $1,000 in your account at any one time.  There is a $2 load fee so $1,000 will cost you $4.  Your first load will cost $5 for the permanent card, but according to Flyertalk you can use promo code 02050053 to remove that fee.

You can withdraw up to $200 at a time, but you can only withdraw up to $200 per seven days.

If you use an Allpoint ATM, there is no fee from Allpoint and a $1 fee from Nationwide Visa Buxx.  My local CVS pharmacies seem to all have Allpoint ATMs.  More on that later! Withdrawing $1,000 will therefore cost you $5 and will require 5 separate trips to the ATM over 5 weeks.  Kind of a bummer!

When you combine all fees, it costs $9 and fives trip to the ATM to manufacture a measly $1,000. If you assume you are loading with a standard 1% card, you get $10 of rewards for a gain of $1 after fees.  Not something worthwhile on a regular basis, but maybe something to consider to reach a spending threshold.

If you have a spouse you can get one account for each person and spend up to $2,000 a month.

Possible Manufactured with Bank of America Preferred Rewards?

The previous fee structure assumed a 1% earning credit card.  That isn't the only option.  You can't use Fidelity American Express because they won't accept American Express to load money.  Don't use a Citibank card like the Citi Double cash (2% cashback that isn't American Express) because Citibank codes the loads as cash advances and you will be charged a fee.

You can use a Bank of America Cash Rewards card connected to Preferred Rewards which will get you 1.75% or $17.50 cashback for every $1,000 you load.  The $9 in fees cuts it to $8.50 overall or $17 for two for the same number of ATM trips.  However, if you consistently go somewhere that has an Allpoints ATM, you might be willing to go through this for the $8.50 or $17.  I'm not willing, at least yet, except for a sign up bonus, but that's ok.

American Express Membership Rewards 40% Transfer Bonus to British Airways Avios Miles

As has been reported in a few sites, like here, here, here, here, here, here, here, and of course, here,  American Express Membership Rewards points can be transferred into British Airways Avois Miles with a 40% bonus until the end of January.

This means that if you transfer 1,000 points, you will get 1,400 miles.  Not too shabby!

This is pretty awesome timing for me since I just used my last Avios miles on a vacation and I also just signed up for an American Express Business Gold card with an 75,000 sign up bonus that can turn into 119,000 Avios miles.  That's a pretty hefty replenishment.

Keep in mind that the sweet spot for British Airways flights are short distance Domestic flights since their award chart is distance based, but if you use the bonus correctly and you follow this post from Dans Deals you may be able to fly from New York to Tel Aviv roundtrip with slightly less than 43,000 Membership Reward points via Air Berlin.

American Express Personal Gift Cards - Increased Maximum to $10,000

American Express Gift Cards are my favorite way to hit a spending threshold on a new credit card because the time to reward ratio is very high.  Between buying American Express gift cards and cashing them out, it will usually take me about less than half an hour.

This is only true when you can get cashback from a Shopping Portal like Top Cashback.  If you can get at least 1.5% cashback, you will have very little out of pocket expenses in cashing them out.  If the shopping portal is paying 2.25%, like Top Cashback did last week and the week before, you will actually have a slight profit on a 1% card and hit your spending threshold.

It used to be that American Express limited you to $5,000 of personal gift cards per 15 business days.  That limit has now been increased to $10,000!

For example, I recently signed up for an American Express Business Gold credit card that gave me 75,000 Membership Rewards points for spending $10,000 in three months.  One can then "buy" 85,000 points (75,000 sign up bonus + 10,000 after spending $10,000) for $65 out of pocket expenses when Top Cashback was at 2.25%.  I would buy miles at that rate any time.

These points can now be worth 119,000 British Airways Avios points with the current 40% bonus transfer.

Keep in mind that anything over $5,000 requires a signature at the time of delivery.

$30 off $300 at Best Buy with American Express - Targeted

Check out the link here to see if you can register for an offer for $30 off a $300 purchase from Best Buy with your American Express card.

Image result for best buy

Update: 12/11/14 -  I went to Best Buy and found Visa Gift Cards and the manager told me that he hasn't seen them in a while and he thought they stopped selling them.  He tried to ring me up and the cards would not scan into the system even though they say Best Buy Visa Gift Card.  Then I looked for Amazon Gift Cards and it seemed that they stopped selling those as well!  I guess you have to actually buy merchandise, oh well.

What you can buy from Best Buy:
- Electronics
- Amazon Gift Cards - Usually in the form of Kindle Gift Cards, which can be used for anything on Amazon
- Visa Gift Cards - $200 variable load cards.  Try to buy 3 and split the payment among two American Express cards.

$300 can be reached on multiple purchases as long as it is before 12/31/2014.  I have successfully registered the first two cards I have tried.

For every $250 you spend at Best Buy you will also get a $5 Best Buy gift card if you are a Best Buy Reward Zone member, which is free to join.  The $5 gift certificates can be used to buy Amazon gift cards.

Living Social 20% Off Today

Disclaimer: I receive a referral commission for the following link(s) and I greatly appreciate supporting the site: Living Social, Discover card

Yesterday, I waiting online to "pay" for tickets at The Liberty Science Center when I overheard someone next to me say, "I can't believe I found a Living Social deal this morning. $9 is such a good deal!  I can't get over it!"

I had to bite my tongue from telling them that I if they had a Bank of America credit or debit card they would be paying $9 less than they paid.  I didn't want to ruin their good deal.

The real problem, though, is that $9 is way too much money to be paying for that Living Social deal.  Use promo code CYBERSALE2 to save 20% off any Living Social deal until the end of the day.

In addition, start your shopping from the Shop Discover (requires a Discover Credit Card) and you will get another 10% off.  Pay with your Discover card and you will get another 5% off!

20% off would have dropped the price to $7.20, 15% more cashback would have dropped the price by another $1.08. Final price could have been $6.12 instead of $9.00 or 32% off!  Oh, well!

Don't have a Living Social account?  Sign up from my link and you will get $10 in Living Social Money

Target American Express Prepaid REDcard - AKA RedBird - Big MS Opportunity!

Within the last couple of months, Target and American Express have combined to come out with a new Prepaid card called REDcard, not to be confused with the regular Target REDcard, which is their regular store credit/debit card.

The features of the Prepaid REDcard are so similar to Bluebird and Serve that it is simply referred to as RedBird in the Blogosphere.  So similar, in fact, that you can only have one of the 3 accounts.  If you have Bluebird or Serve, you will have to cancel your account before you can get a REDcard.

Why You Should Care

REDcard is a major upgrade from Serve/Bluebird for Manufactured Spending if you live near a Target.  You can add up to $5,000 monthly to your REDcard at any Target register with any credit card and zero fees.  You can then pay your credit card bill directly from the money in REDcard account or withdraw the money to your Bank Accouint.

A regular Target REDcard gives you a 5% discount at Target and REDcard is no different, you will get the same 5%.

Limits

- $5,000 of monthly fee free credit card
- $2,500 daily limit
- $500 limit for temporary version

You need to make two trips a month to Target to get the full $5,000.

How to Get the Card

To get a REDcard, you need to buy a temporary version in store and register it online to receive a permanent card.  The temporary version looks like this:

Target_Prepaid_REDcard

Once you have the permanent version, you can load it with a credit card at any Target Location.

You can have someone else buy a RedBird card for you.  If you are buying for someone else, put in your information when buying the temporary card and then the personal information can be changed when registering for the permanent card.  You can only buy one temporary card per social security number per day.

Category Bonuses

You load at regular Target checkout lines so it is possible that if your Target has a pharmacy or is considered a grocery store that you might be able to get category bonuses on your credit card.  I haven't seen anyone confirm this.  Even if that doesn't work, you can still load with Fidelity American Express (2% everywhere) and get $100 per REDcard every month!  That's sweet!

You can still load $1,000 a month with a Debit Card online, like a Paypal Business Debit card, for even more money.  Paypal Business Debit gets 1% for loading to Serve, I assume the same will be true with Redbird

REDcard vs. Serve

There are a few differences between Serve and Redbird.  Serve can be loaded online with a credit card for free, but only up to $1,500 a month with Softcard.  Redbird's $5,000 monthly limit is much higher.

There are only two reasons to prefer Serve:
1) If you have no Target that's convenient, Redbird is not for you.
2) If you really care about Amex promotions like Small Business Saturday.  I assume this will be added to Redbird eventually, but it is currently only available on Serve and Bluebird.  I haven't switched until now because my Serve accounts were worth $300 between myself and my wife and our subaccounts.

Other than that, Redbird kicks Serve in the pants! Enjoy it while it lasts.  Once it shuts down, I'm sure we'll find something else in our perpetual game of Manufactured Spending Whack a Mole.

I hope to be switching soon once someone from a different state sends it too me.

Top Cashback 2.25% Today Only

Disclaimer: I receive a referral commission for the following link(s) and I greatly appreciate supporting the site: Top Cashback

Until the rest of 12/4, Top Cashback is offering 2.25% cashback for buying American Express Gift Cards.

The maximum you can buy per person is $5,000 per 15 business days (may have changed to $10,000 - I will check tonight.  Cashback is even better at $10,000). 2.25% is $112.50 cashback from Top Cashback. Purchase fees and shipping fees come out to $16.85.

Before I get into any heavy math, I will give you a preview of what you will get:

  1. 3.9% cashback everywhere or $55 with a Fidelity American Express.
  2. Meet a spending threshold and break even on a 1% cashback card
  3. "Buy" your favorite miles for under a penny per point.

1) Fidelity American Express

  • 2% cashback everywhere. For a $5,016.85 order, this comes out to $100.33 from Fidelity and $112.50 from Top Cashback. After fees, this comes out to about $196, which is 3.9% cashback to spend anywhere. Not too shabby!

2) Meet a Spending Threshold

  • Recently signed up for a credit card and need to spend money to get the bonus? Me too! You can buy these gift cards to put money on your credit card now and use these gift cards over time.
    • Assuming your credit card gets 1% cashback on every purchase, you will get $50 cashback from your credit card and $112.50 from Top Cashback for a total of $145.65 after fees or 2.9% cashback while meeting a spending threshold at the same time.
3) Buy Miles Cheaply
  • You can take this as an opportunity to buy 5,000 miles on your favorite credit card for a very cheap price. You would want to cash out the gift cards to make it worthwhile. That comes next.

Using American Express Gift Cards

What should you do with these gift cards once you buy them?

  1. Spend them like an American Express credit card. You can buy one $3,000 and one $2,000 card so it isn't too much of a hassle. I recommend not using them on any purchase that you might want to return.
  2. Cash out. I don't know of any way to do this cheaply. You can use Google Wallet to send money to a friend (read: my wife) who can then withdraw to a bank account. This costs a whopping 2.9% or $145. You will keep about $4,855 of the $5,000.
    • With Fidelity American Express you will end up keeping about $45 for about half an hour of work.
    • If you are meeting a spending threshold, you will just about break even and still be $5,000 closer to your target
    • If you are buying miles, you will be getting 5,000 miles at a fee of $0.0088 per mile.
      • You are "buying" 5000 miles for $44 after fees

No promo codes! Your cashback from Top Cashback will be invalidated.

It seems as though the limit per 15 days has been increased to $10,000.  Anyone have experience on that?  Comment below
