You May Be Entitled to Unclaimed Money!

If a company owes someone money and is unable to locate that person they will contact their State's Comptroller and the money will sit there until it is claimed.

You or someone you know may be owed money and not even realize it.  On the New York website you can search by name so you can find money that your friends' are owed too.  I have already found for my parents and a few of my friends!

Here is the New York State Comptroller's Office of Unclaimed Funds site.

If you live in a different state, you can find the website for your state here.

Bing Rewards - Get Amazon Gift Cards Just for Searching

Disclaimer: Bing Rewards is only for those who are extra thrifty or who have a lot of extra time :)  The rewards program takes a bit of time everyday and doesn't get you that much, but you can and will get free gift cards to Amazon.  The bottom line is that the time:rewards ratio is not very favorable but I still do it because it is free money and I can't turn that down.

Here is how it works:

You sign up for a Windows Live account and Bing Rewards.

For every 525 credits you accumulate, you can redeem the rewards for a $5 Amazon gift card.  Once you hit the Gold level, it will only take 475 credits.

Search:
For every 2 searches you do, Bing will give you one credit.  There is a maximum number of searches you can do.  This is different for everyone.  I started out with 10 credits a day, which then went up to 20 once I reached Silver level and now went back down to 10 when I redeemed my first rewards.  Others have started out with 8 and others have started out with 44.  It's kind of random.

Extra Bonus When You Are First Starting off:
When you first start off, you will be able to get around 50 credits for going through the Bing Rewards Tour and clicking on everything.  You also can get 3-6 credits a day extra when you click on the daily rewards.  In addition, once you reach silver status you get a 50 credit bonus.

The Bottom Line:
It took me about 2-2 1/2 weeks to get my first $5.  It takes me about a minute and a half a day and it is slightly addicting.  Here is the way to do it.  Search something random.  There will be related searches on the side.  Right click on each related search and click "open link in new tab".  Then move on to the next window and do the same until you have exhausted your searches for the day.  This takes about 2 minutes a day.

Once you get your $5 reward, they email you a code and you redeem it in your Amazon account right away and the next time you make a purchase, you can use your $5!

Even if you are only getting 13 credits a day (10 for searches and 3 for daily bonuses), you can get a $5 gift card almost monthly (about every 40 days- 36 days once you reach gold status).  It isn't much, but it's free.  If you start off with 44 a day, you can get a Gift Card every 12 days, that's over $10 a month, but it will take a few more minutes a day to do the searches.

I Love Garage Sales

My wife and I just went to a coordinated block sale.  4 or 5 houses on one block got together and they all had separate garage sales at the same time.

You can get some great deals at a garage sale.  There is a limited time when they are selling and they are dedicated sellers.  As one person told me today, "I don't want this stuff going back in my house".  That was music to my ears :)

Here is what we got for $41 (sticker price - $57.25 - I don't even know how much it would cost new)

Here are some individual pictures

The first two items were a boppy pillow and a little shelf for $6 (sticker price $7.25 - the soda did not come with it :(

After that, we got 9 shirts/jeans/coats for $10 (sticker price $15).  A grandmother was selling her only grandchild's clothing.  She said, "he was really spoiled."  They are in beautiful condition and probably weren't worn very much. (of course the couch itself we got at a different Estate sale :-)

This is was our big ticket item of the day.  We were looking for some lawn furniture for some, but we figured we would eventually find something at a garage sale that we liked.  These were $25 (sticker price - $35) for two reclining chairs and a foot stand.  Overall, we had a very successful day!

Target Brand Diapers (Up & Up) - Alternative to Pampers

For the past 6 months or so, my wife and I have been using Target Brand (Up & Up) Diapers -  and we haven't looked back.  We used to be BJ's members for pampers diapers, but we decided to give Target a shot and not have to pay the membership fee at BJ's.

I have many friends who use Target Brand Diapers and they haven't noticed any difference between them and Pampers.

In addition to the price difference, here are some suggestions on how to buy them

  • Get Yourself a Target Red Card (credit or debit card)
  • Save a Trip - Buy Your Diapers Online
    • Free shipping with your Target Red Card - no minimum purchase necessary
    • Same price online as in the store
    • Even if you have no Target near you, you can still use their diapers if you buy online
  • If you have to go to Target anyway, get a $1 in store only coupon

Anyone have any experience with Target diapers they want to share?  What about other discount brands?  Please share in the Comments section.

You must use an American Express Card

Shoes.com - $10 off a $50 Purchase

You can get $10 off a $50 purchase from shoes.com with this link.

They have free shipping and free shipping on returns within the first 60 days so you can buy shoes in a few colors and sizes and only keep the ones you like.

They have one pretty cool feature.  In the top right corner you can hit the "sale" button and your shoes size and every shoe in your size that is on sale will come up.

These Dr. Scholl's shoes came up as what seemed like a decent deal when I first looked at $46 (normally $69).

You can add sesame street socks for your kids at $6 and you will get past the $50 mark to get your $10 off.

Start your purchase from Ebates and get 8% cashback as well.  You will still get your normal cashback from your credit card as well.

Don't have ebates?  Sign up here for free.  You also get a $10 gift card to Target, Barnes and Noble, Home Depot or Magazines.com after your first $25 purchase

I would go to shoes.com from ebates, close the webpage, then go back to the link from the top of the page to get your $10 in addition.

Need a Coupon? Sign up for an Email Subscription (and then cancel later ;)

I signed up for a banana republic credit card because I was shopping there.  When I signed up for the card, I bought 4 pairs of pants for $88.

After signing up for paperless statements and emails and a few other things, they sent me a gift card worth $50 at any banana republic store, which needed to be used by the end of June.

Since I am on vacation, I decided to go back to the Banana Factory Outlet Store (Niagara Outlet Mall) and use my $50.

I looked online for some printable coupons and the best I could find was 10% off a $100 purchase.  That wasn't going to help because I was trying to spend as close to $50 as possible.  I then saw that if you sign up for emails, you can get a 15% off coupon with no minimum purchase.  Since I have multiple email accounts, I was able to get the coupon even though I have already signed up for their emails.

Pants were $50, but the whole store was 40% off so they ended up being $30.  After the 15% off coupon, the pants were $25.50 each so I bought two pairs for $1.  This means that in the end, the pants were 6 for $89 or $14.83 each.  Not too bad.
